Holitions impressive data presentation systems.

This week we visited Holition, a software firm who create Augmented Reality apps and data visualisation systems for companies. They showed us this piece of software which they created for an App called Grabble. It was projected on a large wall meaning it was really easy to see all of the details. 

The app shows users fashion items from a wide range of different brands and people can choose whether they 'like' it or not. The software Holition created takes all of the data about which products are 'liked' and shows them on this chart. 

Each 'like' is shown as a particle of data and it moves in the direction of the fashion brand that the 'liked' product beongs to. So by looking at the ring of fashion brands, you can immediate see which one has more particles or 'likes'. 

Brands Like Zara and Asos have a constant stream of likes where as Marks & Spencer and Miss Selfridge have very few. With a quick glance at the system you can immediately see which brands are the most popular with the apps demographic (16-25 year olds). It becomes a powerful analytical tool for comparing all of the brands across the spectrum. 

Software like this is incredibly important because the app is gathering huge amounts of useful data from users. Users can simply use the app to find products they like, and in the background this software can help companies and advertisers see which brands are most popular and when. It's breakthrough is that it shows this data in real time so it gives companies live information on how they are doing in a competitive environment.

Holition have been able to harness this data through brilliant design. They tested many different versions and found that having circular ring of brands felt like a 'universe' and it meant the streams of particles were able to go from the centre in any direction giving a sense of equality amongst the brands. This 'equality' of the brands means the data dictates which brands stand our more as they have a heavier stream of likes.

Holition have now started creating more data visualisation systems for other companies as this project was so successful. This kind of software is really powerful and it would be amazing to see it used in other situations. The key thing here is that the data already exists, but it has been made usefully by the way it is presented. The software adds all of the value and lets people easily understand and use the data to make better comparisons and decisions.

As part of my Graphic design communication course, we got to choose a completely separate topic that we would explore for a few weeks. I choose a topic called The Smart City where we explored the technology and innovations that help create modern day and future cities. This post was written specifically for this project.
