INK ON PAPER

I love this view of Berlin as it shows the old & new in one scene

This piece spans 2.2 x 1.5 metres and shows the BODE Museum on Berlin's Museum Island (Museumsinsel) with the Fernsehturm TV tower in the background. I used hand cut wooden sticks (pictured below) as the main tool for drawing with the ink. To add a smoky look to the clouds and sky, I smeared ink across the piece with scrunched up tissues. Finding an interesting way to draw the waves was challenging and it took a lot of trial and error. I ended up flicking ink on with a large brush and smearing it with a dry paint brush to create a water-like texture. I love how this scene has so much history, but also the modern architecture behind. There is a lot of man-made structures but also natural elements throughout.
